Four Books Every Content Creator Should Read.

It’s been an odd year and twelve months ago many of us were left with this idea of more time and what we should do! Some of us had to work, others had to shield and working from home meant a huge change to many lives. I decided one of the things I wanted to do was read more books.

For those who don’t know my name is Arani and I’m one of the staff within the Elite and I run my own business as a graphic designer and branding specialist for content creators! I love helping people and because of this I’ve decided to put together a list of four books that I personally believe every content creator should read in order to help grow both personally and professionally but also understand self-care is important!

I’ve built a list of five books that cover everything from social media marketing, mental health and mindset! I’ve not been shoe-horned into promoting these, but are material I think would be useful for every streamer to read!

1. The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck – Mark Manson

This book by Mark Manson is one of my favourites to have read during lockdown. Many of these ‘self-help’ books you see try focus on a positive mind-set, everything is okay and you need to suck it up. This book is a profanity laden, poop joke filled refreshing revelation that makes it okay to not be okay.

I should warn in advance it is full of profanity and it has a semi-aggressive yet sarcastic and blunt undertone to it so it may not be for everyone.

The title may be like “Oh don’t care about anything” but in reality it’s more about the things you shouldn’t care about and go screw it to and things you should. It focuses on helping you as a person learn that it’s okay to make mistakes, mess up and then work on improving them without being all preachy!

It can be a little condescending in places but if you can look past that it really is useful in helping how to see the world in a way that isn’t going to drive your stress levels up through the ceiling.

2. You Are Not Your Stream – CaseyScreamsBack & HeartSupport

This one isn’t a bestseller and is hidden in the depths of Amazon, but honestly worth getting even if you don’t think it’s going to help you. This was written with the help of a non-profit organisation so all the royalties go to charity.

This book focuses on everything that causes stress as streamers, whether its trolls, social media or even numbers. It’s not a self-help book but does indicate that everything you go through, millions of others do and tries to help make Twitch a better place.

Everything in here has come from other streamers so it’s 100% relatable! Honestly it’s one of the best things I’ve read for streamers that doesn’t give you a load of garbage and focus on the numbers, views and community but on you as a person and a streamer and it can in the long term I think make you a better community leader.

3. See You on the Internet: Building your Small Business with Digital Marketing – Avery Swart

“I’m not growing.” “I’m not seeing engagement.” “Nobody comes to my stream” these are the three things I hear most when I’m working with streamers.

One of the things I then ask is “What’s your social media strategy?” to which the response is usually a blank face or “I don’t know what that is.”

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to utilise and market their brand. It breaks it down into small manageable chunks that don’t frustrate your or use corporate speak! In five steps you’ll have an accurate strategy to build brands, increase engagement and exposure and help you as a content creator grow! It’ll show you how to properly track growth using analytics and data rather than just follows and likes.

Don’t let the title fool you in thinking that as a small business it means something professional and selling actual goods. The lessons in this can be adjusted and applied to content creation as it is in essence like running a small business. This is the one I use after reading hundreds of marketing strategy books, to help me grow my business!

4. Mindset: Changing the way you think to fulfil your potential – Carol Dweck

If you want to learn to foster motivation and have aspirations I strongly would recommend this. It was recommended to me at a business development conference back in 2019 and like everyone else I put off reading it until I actually had time.

This is another self-help book of sorts but this focuses on changing your mindset in terms of “fixed” to “growth”. What does this mean? Well in essence you go from limiting yourself to understanding how to tackle problems and grow from it!

It takes the approach that intelligence and self-esteem don’t always lead to growth but can in fact hinder it. It’s a little more scientific than previous books mentioned here but it really does help to foster a love of learning and developing which can lead to growth over time.

So there you have it folks. A short reading list for you to go through! Take your time, enjoy it and don’t feel pressured! These won’t be useful for everyone but can be a good stepping stone into building a better brand and help you as a content creator!
